Costume design for a Butterfly by Wilhelm (William John Charles Pitcher), A Dream of Butterflies and Roses, London Coliseum, 1915. Described as 'A Fantasy', A Dream of Butterflies and Roses was a ballet choreographed by Adeline Genée. It was first performed in 1911, also at the Coliseum, when the title was A Dream of Roses and Butterflies. The piece was an extended version of the divertissement Roses and Butterflies, presented by Genée in the musical comedy, The Bachelor Belles, at the Chestnut Street Opera House, Philadelphia, on 3rd October 1910. Genée expanded the ballet for London, adding an introduction in which a young girl, after a lovers' tiff and reconciliation, falls asleep on her couch, holding the posy of roses her admirer has given her - the divertissement is her dream.
